Gather your materials.
To trim your cuticles, you will need a cuticle trimmer, a file, and a set of cuticle scissors. You will also need soap and water, lotion, and a hand towel.
Prep your nails.
Wash your hands and nails thoroughly with soap and water to remove any dirt or oil. If you have polish on your nails, remove it with nail polish remover.
Trim your cuticles.
Before you start your manicure, you’ll need to trim your cuticles. To do this, first soak your hands in warm water for a few minutes to soften the cuticles. Then, use a cuticle trimmer to gently push back and trim any excess cuticle around your nails. Be careful not to trim too close to the base of your nails, as this can damage the nail bed.
After you’ve trimmed your cuticles, it’s time to move on to the actual manicure.
File and shape your nails.
Before you start trimming your cuticles, it’s important to file and shape your nails. Cuticle trimmers are designed for use on bare nails, so you’ll want to make sure that your nails are clean and free of polish before you start. Use a nail file to shape your nails into the desired shape. If you’re not sure what shape to file them into, consult a professional manicurist for guidance.
Once your nails are shaped, use the cuticle trimmer to gently push back your cuticles. Start at one side of the nail and work your way around, being careful not to overdo it. You should only remove the very top layer of the cuticle – if you go too deep, you risk damaging the nail bed.
Once you’ve pushed back your cuticles, use the trimmer to carefully snip away any hangnails or loose skin. Again, be careful not to overdo it – snip only as much as necessary to get rid of the hangnail or loose skin.
Finally, use the file on the trimmer to smooth out any rough edges around the nail.
Apply polish.
Now that you have your cuticle trimming tool and your nails are looking fabulous, it’s time to apply some polish. Start with a base coat to protect your nails and make your polish last longer. Follow with two coats of your favorite color, letting each coat dry completely before applying the next. Finish with a top coat for an extra glossy finish.
